About Fran KuehnI am a licensed independent clinical social worker and certified Cognitive Behavior Therapist with 15 years experience treating adolescents and adults with anxiety, depression, OCD and mood disorders. I have particular experience working with young people with Autism Spectrum Disorders. I enjoy working with young adults through their transitions into and out of school, home and career.
Every situation we face is interpreted through the lens of what we believe about the world and ourselves. Our thoughts, feelings and behaviors at times do not support our progress toward a fulfilled life. I believe that every person has the capacity to learn, grow and change and I am committed to assisting you through this challenging and rewarding process. |
"As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives." - Henry David Thoreau
My Qualifications
I have advanced certification in the practice of Cognitive Behavior Therapy, (CBT) the world's most validated form of psychotherapy. I am a Diplomate in the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, and am a course designer and instructor of Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Simmons Graduate School of Social Work in Boston, MA.
I have training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, the evidence-based practice of paying attention, in a particular way, to the present moment, pioneered by Jon Kabat-Zinn. I have additional training in Mindfulness Fundamentals and in evoking the Relaxation Response, developed at the Benson-Henry institute of Mind-Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Our Process
Our work will begin by taking a detailed history of the sorts of challenges you have faced and strategies used so far to deal with them. We will collaboratively identify and choose goals, targets of intervention, and methods of practice outside of session time to reinforce learning and accelerate progress. We will assess our work together and make adjustments as necessary. We will plan for the end of treatment as we go along, to ensure that our time together remains efficient and productive.
Treatment and Services
I utilize CBT extensively, by teaching my clients how to recognize the relationship between their thoughts, feelings and emotions. I teach clients to challenge and alter thought patterns that contribute to psychological distress. Once thoughts have been addressed, individuals experience improvement in their mood, which creates the opportunity to act in ways that support their goals.
CBT is the world's most validated form of psychotherapy. It is an evidence based model which is beneficial in addressing issues of anxiety, depression, panic, eating disorders, as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and addictive behaviors.
Mindfulness: Being mindful enables people to be more present with their thoughts, feelings, emotions, body sensations, and environment. Developing a practice of mindfulness helps individuals respond rather than react to the events of their lives. I incorporate mindfulness into my practice by teaching clients how to take space from a given situation, attain objectivity and equanimity and develop self-compassion.
Relaxation Response: Our minds and bodies do worse under stress. Clients develop and practice a variety of stress management techniques to calm their body and mind. These techniques include breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation and visualization designed to evoke the relaxation response.
Exposure Therapy: A specific type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which treats a variety of issues, including anxiety and panic, specific phobias, and addictive behaviors. With the support of the therapist, clients are gradually exposed to feared situations, using relaxation strategies, coping skills, and behavioral techniques. Through exposure therapy, clients will overcome their fears and gain control over situations which are overwhelming and distressing.
For Professionals: I am available to provide individual and group clinical supervision to Social Work Professionals both pre-and post graduate.
Workshops and Trainings: Specialized training topics include CBT, CBT for Adolescents, CBT for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Alternative Student Discipline Practices, School Mental Health and School Culture.
